Introduction: Cara, a unique social media and portfolio platform tailored for artists in the entertainment industry, has recently teamed up with Glaze to protect artists from style mimicry in generative AI models.
Background: Launched in January 2023, Cara’s inception aimed to create a secure haven for creatives to share and publish their art, find work, and evade generative AI scraping—a response to the surge of AI-generated art and the lack of protection offered by many social media platforms. Led by Jingna Zhang, a former CGHUB alumna, Cara operates with a team of passionate volunteers committed to providing a platform made by and for artists.
Insight from Zhang: Commenting on the need for such a platform, Zhang highlighted the rampant spread of generative AI and the ethical concerns surrounding its acceptance in various online spaces. “With generative AI becoming widespread, we felt the need to build a platform where human-made art can be found easily. Many platforms currently accept AI art when it’s not ethical, while others have promised ‘no AI forever’ policies without in-depth industry knowledge,” Zhang explained. “The future of creative industries will require nuanced understanding and support to help artists and companies connect and work together, and Cara wants to be there to bridge the gap.”
Glaze Integration: The addition of Glaze to all Cara Portfolio accounts, with community accounts gaining access gradually, enables creatives to protect their work from style mimicry in AI model training. Glaze works by comprehending the AI models training on human art and employing machine learning algorithms to compute a set of minimal changes to artworks. This ensures that the art remains unchanged to human eyes but appears dramatically different to AI models.
User Interface: With the new dashboard, users can effortlessly apply Glaze to their posts, select the intensity of protection, and receive notifications once their content is processed and published.
Accessibility: While Glaze was previously available for free, its accessibility was limited to those with the capability to run it on personal computers. To address this, Web Glaze was launched, making the process more accessible. Cara’s direct integration with Glaze further streamlines the process, aiming to protect artists’ work effectively.
Beta Version: Although still in its early beta stage, Cara’s Glaze integration has garnered significant interest, with over 5,000 signups on the waiting list within the first week alone. Updates, including the addition of Nightshade, are expected soon.
Addressing Concerns: Jingna Zhang also addressed concerns about Glaze’s efficacy, stating that while challenges persist, Glaze has not yet been bypassed, despite some claims.
Conclusion: With Cara’s Glaze integration, artists can confidently share their work on the platform, knowing it’s protected from AI scraping. This collaboration not only preserves their artistic integrity in the digital landscape but also reinforces Cara’s commitment to providing a safe and supportive space for artists worldwide.
